Hot Weather Reminder: Your Dog Needs Water Too

When the weather gets warmer, it’s easy to remember our own water bottle, sunscreen, and shade. But our dogs need the same kind of consideration — especially when temperatures climb quickly.

Dogs can overheat faster than we sometimes realize. They do not cool themselves the same way people do, and even a simple walk, backyard play session, or car ride can become uncomfortable if they do not have access to fresh water and a cool place to rest.

A good warm-weather habit is simple: keep water available before, during, and after outdoor time. If you are heading out for a walk, bring water for your dog too. Collapsible bowls or portable bottles can make this easy, especially on longer outings.

It is also worth paying attention to when you walk. Early morning and later evening are often better choices on hot days. Midday heat can be harder on dogs, and pavement can become uncomfortable or even unsafe for paws. A quick hand check on the sidewalk can help — if it feels too hot for your hand, it is likely too hot for your dog’s feet.

Shade matters as well. Even dogs who love to lounge outside should always have a cool, shaded area available. And of course, dogs should never be left in a parked vehicle during warm weather, even for a short time.

Watch for signs that your dog may be getting too hot, including heavy panting, slowing down, drooling, restlessness, or seeming unusually tired. When in doubt, pause, offer water, and move to a cooler space.

Summer is a great time to enjoy more outdoor moments with your dog. A little planning helps keep those moments safe, comfortable, and fun.
